Preserving West Virginia’s Past for Future Generations

West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and HistoryThe state of West Virginia is a place filled with a rich, vast history seen across the land in properties dating all the way back to prehistoric times. The Department of Arts, Culture, and History believes in the intrinsic values of each of these properties and has made it its mission to preserve and protect these historic landmarks in order to encourage, inform, support, and participate with the community in education of the past.

In addition to historic preservation, the Department also actively supports and works with local artists, art organizations, schools, and community groups, with ongoing exhibits and events to showcase their talent and work to the public. The goal is to help provide a thriving environment for creative expression and appreciation for the arts.

Educational and Fun Exhibits

West Virginia Department of ArtsThe Department is always hosting a rotating list of exhibits to educate and showcase the culture of West Virginia to the general public. Here’s what’s coming up in the month of March:

  • Poverty Point Earthworks: Evolutionary Milestones of the Americas (March 14, 2-3:00 pm): Marvel in ancient earthworks that the are oldest of their size and shape in North America. Curated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks, this exhibit features The Poverty Point Earthworks of Louisiana, which were constructed between 1750 and 1350 BC and consist of a series of semi-circular ridges where people once lived.
  • Preschool Story Time at the Mound (March 18, 11:00 am): It’ll be a day of fun for the younger kiddos, where they can listen to stories and participate in arts & crafts at the Marshall County Student Art Show.
  • Fossil Day (March 21, 12-4:00 pm): Act as an archaeologist for the day by viewing special fossil displays and participating in activities related to fossil digging. If you have any fossils in your possession, bring them in for expert identification!
