JEEP COMPASS VS JEEP CHEROKEE: ENGINE SPECS
To get started, we’ll go right under the hood of these two vehicles. While the Compass and the Cherokee come with impressive and powerful engines, there are a few differences between them.
In the Cherokee, you’ll get a standard 2.4L Tigershark® MultiAir® 2 engine, which is paired with the standard 9-speed automatic transmission. For a bit more oomph, you can opt for the available 3.2L Pentastar® V6 engine, which provides a towing capacity up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped. Also available is the 2.0L Turbo engine, which provides 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque capabilities.
Over in the Compass, you’ll get a standard 2.4L Tigershark® engine that produces 177 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission in front-wheel drive trim levels or an available 9-speed automatic transmission in 4x4 trims.
If you’re someone who tends to do a lot of commuting, you’ll need a car with excellent fuel efficiency. With either the Jeep Compass or the Jeep Cherokee, you can expect less frequent trips to the fuel pump. With the base engines in each vehicle, both the Compass and the Cherokee will achieve up to an EPA-estimated 22 city/31 highway MPG. However, if you opt for the available 2.0L Turbo engine in the Cherokee, you’ll receive the highest fuel ratings between the two SUVs: an EPA-estimated 23 city/31 highway MPG.
EXTERIOR DESIGN & DIMENSIONS
Now, we’ll dive into the design elements that make each of these vehicles stand out.
In the Compass and the Cherokee, you’ll get the choice to add an available panoramic sunroof. The Compass offers the available Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof, and in the Cherokee, you’ll have the available CommandView® Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof with a full power front and fixed rear. Both sunroofs will flood the entire car with sunlight.
In the Cherokee, you’ll find standard 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, but you can choose from eight other available wheel options. The Compass comes with standard 16-inch black styled steel wheels, and you’ll also have eight other available wheel options to choose from, just like the Cherokee.
The Jeep Cherokee and the Jeep Compass are relatively comparable in size. However, their exterior dimensions differ just a bit. Choosing between these SUVs based on size comes down to personal preference.
The Jeep Cherokee measures 182 inches long, 73.2 inches wide, and 65.7 inches tall. Also, the wheelbase is 106.5 inches. On the other hand, the Jeep Compass is 173 inches long, 73.8 inches wide, and 64.6 inches high. The wheelbase of the Compass is 103.8 inches.
Exterior Paint Colors

INTERIOR COMFORT & DIMENSIONS
Both the Compass and the Cherokee can comfortably fit up to five passengers. In the Cherokee, you’ll have 128 cubic feet of passenger volume, and the Compass provides 100 cubic feet of passenger volume.

Both models provide an ample amount of cargo room as well. In the Cherokee, you’ll get 25.8 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row and up to 54.7 cubic feet of cargo room when you fold down those second-row seats. In the Compass, you’ll get 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats upright and 59.8 cubic feet of storage room with the second-row seats folded down.
Compass vs Cherokee: Interior Features
As we mentioned in the previous section, the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Cherokee are all about providing comfort for their riders. For starters, the Jeep Cherokee comes standard with 6-way manually adjustable driver and front-passenger seats, which you can also find a few trim levels up on the Jeep Compass. The comfort continues with the Compass’s standard cloth low-back bucket seats, whereas the Cherokee comes standard with cloth bucket seats.
Both SUVs come jam-packed with a wide selection of advanced technology features, including Uconnect® 4 with a 7-inch touchscreen display. Both the Compass and the Cherokee come standard with Apple CarPlay®. However, only the Compass comes standard with Bluetooth streaming audio. You’ll have to move up to a higher trim level on the Cherokee to receive this connectivity and entertainment feature. One last difference to note: The base trim of the Cherokee offers an audio jack input for mobile devices, and the Compass does not.
